Laser and light technologies are used in a variety of ways in cosmetic treatments today, and one of the most convenient for our patients at New Reflections Plastic Surgery is hair removal. This procedure offers permanent hair reduction through a series of treatment sessions, relieving you of the constant shaving, waxing or application of depilatories to keep your skin smooth and hair-free. The treatment is appropriate for both men and women, offering versatility in addition to efficacy to ensure you can achieve all of your cosmetic goals.

Dr. Patel uses IPL treatments for hair removal at New Reflections. The light pulses target the hair follicle, causing damage to the follicle that prevents hair from growing there. The procedure works on hair currently in the growth phase and must be repeated to ensure it addresses all of the follicles in the treatment area eventually. Not all of the hair follicles are in the growth phase at the same time; some are in a resting or transitional phase. By undergoing multiple treatment sessions, Dr. Patel can treat all of the follicles for the best possible results.

What areas does laser hair removal treat?

Laser hair removal works on many different areas, including:

  • Face and neck
  • Arms and armpits
  • Chest and back
  • Bikini line
  • Legs

No matter which area you have treated, you can rest assured you will see significant, long-lasting hair reduction. Hair that does grow back in the treatment area is usually lighter and finer than your original hair, making it less noticeable overall. In addition, this procedure eliminates skin irritation and painful ingrown hairs that often occur with razors and waxing.

Is laser hair removal right for me?

This treatment typically works best on patients with fair skin and darker hair colors, since the contrast between the two makes it easier for the laser energy to be delivered directly into the follicle. However, Dr. Patel can adjust the light setting to address darker skin tones as well with just a few additional treatment sessions. The device does not work on hair that is white, gray or red.

What is the treatment like?

Laser hair removal takes just a few minutes for smaller locations like the upper lip, or about half an hour for larger areas like the back or chest. In most cases, patients can tolerate the procedure without anesthesia or numbing medicine. However, a topical numbing cream can be offered before treating sensitive areas like the bikini line if your comfort level is a concern to you.

A handheld device is run across the treatment area, delivering the light pulses into the hair follicles. Patients describe the sensation as the light energy penetrates like a rubber band snapping against the skin. The feeling is quick, and there is little or no discomfort once the procedure is over. Patients can resume daily activities right away. The skin may be slightly tender and flushed for a day or two, similar to how it feels when you have a sunburn.

What can I expect from results?

You will start to see positive results within days after your first procedure. Hair will begin to shed from the treated follicles, and it will be difficult for replacement hair to grow in. Most of our patients see full results after 4-6 treatments, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. At that point, an occasional touch-up procedure should be sufficient for maintaining your smoother look.
